Facts & Figures for December and the end of 2011

Compared to 2010 in December:
There were 108 Walkers against 111, a decrease of 3 (-2.70%)
There were 315 Person Walks against 283, an increase of 32 (+11.31%)
There were no new walkers

Compared to the whole of 2010, 2011 has been a bit of a roller coaster.
In 2010 we saw 316 different walker, 2011 we saw 269 a decrease of 47 (-14.87%)
We attracted 65 new walkers, against 115 in 2010 a decrease of 50 (-43.48%)
There were 260 walks, two more than in 2010
The total number of Person Walks fell by 287 from the 2010 record of 5559 to 5272 (-5.16%)

So, we lost 47 and gained 50 walkers - about even.
We gained two walks due to the calendar.
However, for the first time in eight years the number of Person walks dropped, and by more than the gain last year.
Was this due to the weather, or the fact that there have been no articles in the GGN? We may never know.

Nordic Walking

Nordic Walking Classes are now available for all age groups.
Some are free, some cost £2.00 a session.

Take a look at our Nordic Walking Page for more details.

First Steps

We offer a First Steps walk at 10:00 on Tuesdays. If necessary this can be an individually tailored walk. If you are interested in this walk. or know someone that might be, please send a mail to Bernard. We will be happy to advise on expectations and ensure that a leader is available.

GGHW Clothing - Withdrawn

As there have been no orders for over a year, and forthcoming logistic issues, we can no longer order clothing with GGHW Logos.
However, we have a Woman's Bottle Green Sweatshirt Size XL in stock Price £22.00.
Please contact Bernard if you would like to buy it.

Link of the Month

Chetcombe House

Chetcombe House is an elegant and cosy country house set in an acre of lovely gardens and located just a few minutes’ walking distance from the centre of the charming Wiltshire town of Mere. It is the home of Sandra Rose and Jerry Meyer who do everything possible to ensure guests have an enjoyable and relaxing stay, beginning with a warm and friendly welcome.

There are some great walks and places to visit, and as ex GGHW walkers, you can reckon on some special treats at this hostelry.

The Bell at Aldworth Britain's most un-spoilt pub

We gave this one a rest in 2011. Watch this space for details in 2012

The walk starts from the Ridgeway Car Park, Rectory Road, Streatley.
To walk from the village you need to allow at least 45 minutes at a brisk pace. Arrival at the Bell is best timed for just before noon to miss the 'rush'.
If you want to try this walk yourself see The Bell at Aldworth for a descriptive route and map to the car park.

WfH Accreditation

In January 2008 GGHW were awarded the WfH Accreditation, one of the first groups in the country to receive this.
Our accreditation was renewed in January 2009, 2010 and again in 2011.

To be able to gain this award, we have to show that we:
bullet

Offer led walks for beginners (First Steps)

bullet

Meet WHI safety and insurance standards

bullet

Collect basic monitoring information

This means that we are recognised by health professionals as part of a nationally and robustly evaluated scheme.

Fitness and the Walker

Local Personal Fitness Trainer Ryan Phillips has put together a Walking Specific Fitness Program.
Go to the special page on the Phillips-Fit web site to view the Program.

Leader Training

We now have 33 trained leaders, but are always on the lookout for more, especially with our numbers increasing.
We do have two people willing to train in the next couple of months. Why not join them?

Please get in touch with Bernard if you want to join the next group to be trained.
Don't worry if you can only commit to just one walk a month, or to be available as a stand in, that is exactly what we need.
