The perch & pike at south stoke
Distance: 4 miles from Goring village centre
Time: Allow 2 hours plus time for eating and drinking at the Perch and Pike T: 01491 872415
Walking Conditions: Ridgeway Path consisting mainly of bridleway with some tarmac at either end. No hills of any consequence and suitable for most large wheeled pushchairs (some gravel)
Parking: Goring Village Car Park. (Pay & Display charges may apply. Please check notices)
Route: Leave the Car Park by the lane running past the public toilets. At the High Street turn left and cross the road where safe to do so. In 150 yds turn right, opposite the Village Hall, into Thames Road. Keeping to the footpath on the left of the road, continue into a lane (Signposted Ridgeway Path) which takes you to Cleeve Road
Cross to the footpath and turn left, down the hill passing Cleeve Mill on the left. Take care when the footpath runs out
At the sharp bend go straight ahead onto the Bridleway marked Ridgeway Path. (Take care not to go up the private drive on the left to the Temple). Continue along the bridleway which narrows a little before emerging onto a road beside the drive to the Leathern Bottle. (Don't be tempted to venture down to the pub unless you have a serious thirst and are prepared to pay serious money to quench it)
Go straight on ignoring the right fork to the railway bridge and continue past the houses and across a field until you reach the village of South Stoke and the road that runs through it. Again continue straight on into the village. You will find the Perch & Pike on the right. This is a popular pub and you are advised to check the availability of food before you set out
When you are refreshed, return to Goring the way you came. A more direct route to the car park is to continue along Cleeve Road, avoiding the narrow lane (ridgeway), passing the Village Recreation Ground. Turn right at the junction with the High Street and left into the lane to the car park beside MaryS
